The Latest On Staying Safe As A Cyclist – Visibility
When you’re out riding on the road, there are a few things you need to consider to keep you safe. One of the most important aspects is visibility.
Many cycling accidents occur simply because motorists fail to see bicycles. This means that improving your visibility can greatly decrease your chances of being involved in an accident.
Here are our latest tips for staying safe as a cyclist and improving your visibility.
Dress to impress
Make sure you wear bright, fluorescent clothing so that you stand out.
Think pink, green, yellow, orange, red. For example, wearing a bright or high-visibility jacket can help you be more easily seen by drivers. Don’t wear muted colours that can blend into the landscape.
Wear reflective gear
If you are riding in low light, like at dawn or dusk, make sure you wear reflective gear. Reflective bands can be worn on your ankles and wrists.
Install reflectors or reflective stickers on your bike’s moving parts for better visibility in motion.
Install lighting
If you’re riding at night, you will need a strong, clear headlight and a red tail light. You can also add a flashing LED light to your helmet, back or chest. Having enough lighting on your bike is crucial for visibility at night, dawn or dusk, or in bad weather.
Be predictable
Follow the road rules and ride predictably so that drivers know where you are. Don’t do something unexpected, because they might not see you.
If you cut in and out of traffic, swerve, or ride between lanes, then drivers won’t see you and you’ll be more likely to get hit.
Avoid blind spots
It’s important to pay attention to vehicles on the road and to avoid stopping in their blind spots. Don’t stop on the right-hand side of vehicles because they might not be able to see you. They could make a right turn and hit you. Instead, always stop behind vehicles where you can be safe.
